The Science of 9 bar of pressure
Introduction
Superkop helps you make perfect espresso coffees with ease. The Superkop espresso tool is a manual lever espresso tool and is unique because the lever handle is connected to a ratchet system such as you see with 4WD cars to lift them out of trouble. This tried mechanism easily lets you create the 9 bar pressure you need for the perfect espresso.
So what does 9 Bar mean
9 Bar is 129.999935 pounds per square inch which equates to 896317.9999308 Pascal (Newton / Square meter) or 896.3 kN/m2
On earth 1 N = 0.102kg(*m/s2). So 896.3 kN/m2 equates to 91,424.334 kg/m2
How does 9 Bar relate to Superkop
The Superkop water reservoir opening has the form of a circle.
The diameter of the water reservoir equals that of the plunger and is 48mm which is 0.048m
The Radius r = 0.5 * Diameter which is 0.024m
The surface Area of the reservoir is pi * r2 which is 3.14 * 0.0242 which gives 0.00180864 m2
So the number of kilograms necessary to create 9 bar of water pressure in the Superkop reservoir is: 91,424.334 kg/m2 * 0.00180864 m2= 165kg
Finalizing
You can imagine how hard it is to put 165kg on top of a plunger without leverage from a lever and a ratchet system.
Once you pull your Superkop espresso you will understand why we say: “Superkop is easy to handle”.
